After a close loss to Penn State in State College for the second straight season, Maryland basketball returns home hoping to salvage as many Big Ten games as possible before the Big Ten Tournament at the end of February.
The Terps return home on Saturday to face Northwestern at noon for the ninth annual Gold Rush game, which carries a Winter Olympics theme this year.
The Wildcats, like Maryland, have had a down season compared to last year, when both reached the NCAA Tournament. The best chance either team has to make the Tournament is if they win the Big Ten Tournament.
The Terps look like they will again be without center Michal Cekovsky on Saturday, a big blow for a team whose biggest weakness is rebounding. But if Bruno Fernando and Sean Obi can fill the void, Maryland should give itself another chance at a win.
The numbers
Maryland: 16-10 (5-8 Big Ten)
Northwestern: 15-10 (6-6 Big Ten)
All-time series: Maryland leads 5-1
Odds: Maryland is a 4.5-point favorite
