The Maryland men’s basketball team has been selected to play in the 2019 AdvoCare Invitational at HP Field House at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida, from Nov. 28 through Dec. 1, 2019.
Maryland is joining a field of eight that includes Davidson, Fairfield, Harvard, Marquette, Temple, Texas A&M and USC.
This will be the second time that Maryland will travel down to Orlando to play in a regular season tournament. In 2008, they competed in the Old Spice Classic in Orlando. On Nov. 27, 2008, Maryland upset the No. 5 Michigan State Spartans 80-62 in the first round of the Classic. The next day, the Terps were routed by the No. 9 Gonzaga Bulldogs, 81-59. Two days later, Maryland was defeated by the Georgetown Hoyas, 75-48, resulting in a fourth-place finish.
Maryland is the only team in the field of eight that’s ranked right now, coming in at No. 24, although Marquette has been ranked this season. Granted, all eight of these rosters will look much different next season with players leaving or recruits coming in.
Two teams in the field made last year’s NCAA Tournament. The Texas A&M Aggies made the Sweet 16 as a No. 7 seed last season, beating Providence and upsetting North Carolina before falling to eventual runner-up Michigan. Davidson also appeared in last year’s tournament as a No. 12 seed but lost to Kenucky in the first round.
The USC Trojans made the NCAA Tournament in 2016 and 2017 under Andy Enfield, and while they missed the dance last season, their 2019 recruiting class includes two top-20 prospects in Isaiah Mobley and Onyeka Okongwu, according to 247Sports Composite rankings. Marquette, Temple and Harvard have all made NCAA Tournament appearances since 2015, while Fairfield has failed to make the dance since 1997.
Villanova won the 2018 AdvoCare Invitational last week, with West Virginia, Gonzaga, Xavier and Kansas winning in the last five years. Gonzaga has won the event three times, also capturing the title in 2012 and 2008.
