Actors, models, musicians and comedians round out the guest list on this spring’s Netflix series Bill Nye Saves the World, and so does former Maryland center Diamond Stone.
Stone’s name appeared out of left field in an ad for the show released on Wednesday.

Model Karlie Kloss, comedian Nazeem Hussain, Scrubs stars Zach Braff and Donald Faison, Community’s Joel McHale, Star Trek’s Wil Wheaton and fashion personality Tim Gunn are some of the show’s other special guests.
Stone, who was drafted by the Clippers last summer after spending one season at Maryland, just casually appears at the 40-second mark, flashing a goofy smile.

So, uh, how did Stone end up here?
The commercial says Nye’s latest effort will address “sex, global warming, GMOs, technology, and alternative medicine.” It’s not exactly clear if Stone’s role would involve any of those topics. The quick shot gives virtually no hints to what he is doing on the show.
My guess is his unique name leads to some sort of experiment involving diamonds or stones, if not both. It stands to reason the producers could have booked someone with a higher profile if their goal were simply to get a cool basketball player on the show. Stone is wearing a basketball jersey in that quick snapshot though, so maybe his 6’10 frame and developed post moves will come into play.
Stone looks like he won’t be the only athlete in the series. Giants outfielder Hunter Pence’s name wasn’t announced, but this appears to be him hitting a clearly CGI baseball:
