The Maryland Terrapins will begin their quest to capture the 2016 NCAA Tournament championship as a No. 5 seed, with an opening-round game against No. 12 seed South Dakota State in the South region. This is the second consecutive year Maryland has made the NCAA Tournament under head coach Mark Turgeon, both times as an at-large selection.
The Terps will travel to Spokane, Washington and play on Friday. Should Maryland advance to the second round, it will face the winner of No. 4 seed California and No. 13 seed Hawaii on Sunday.
The Terrapins finished the regular season with a 24-7 record, going 12-6 in Big Ten play. After beginning the season as a trendy national title pick, Maryland struggled over the last several weeks, winning just three of its last eight games. That stretch included a road loss to lowly Minnesota, who won just eight games this season.
