Former Maryland basketball coach Lefty Driesell recruited some of the players who have their numbers hanging from the rafters in Xfinity Center, and in February, he’ll join them.
Driesell, who coached the Terps from 1969 to 1986 (17 seasons), will get a banner in his own name in a pregame ceremony before Maryland takes on Ohio State on Feb. 11.
“We are thrilled and excited to honor Lefty Driesell,” Maryland director of athletics Kevin Anderson said in a release. “Lefty is more than just a coaching legend who won 786 career games. He is a pioneer, an innovator, and continues to be committed to growing the game of college basketball. It will be a special moment for all Maryland fans to celebrate with Lefty.”
The release points out that Driesell recruited Tom McMillen, Len Elmore, John Lucas, Albert King, Buck Williams and Len Bias, all of whom starred for the Terps. He also instituted “Midnight Madness,” a practice adopted by programs around the country where teams would have their first practice of the year at midnight.
