Travis Valmon is Maryland basketball’s new walk-on

Our Profiles in Terpage series continues with the team’s freshman walk-on.

Scenes from 2016 Maryland Madness Sammi Silber / Testudo Times

Maryland basketball kicks off its season against American on Nov. 11. Until then, we’re profiling every member of the team.

Travis Valmon, guard

Height: 6’1

Weight: 175 pounds

Year: Freshman

High school: Georgetown Prep

Jersey No.: 20

How Valmon got to College Park

Valmon’s dad, Andrew, is Maryland’s track and field coach. That almost certainly played a role in his coming here, as Valmon chose to play basketball instead of run track at the next level. He attended high school at Georgetown Prep, then elected to take a post-grad year at Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire.

High school highlights

2016 prospectus

Valmon is a walk-on, which means his role on this team will mostly exist in practice, along with helping Andrew Terrell cheer from the end of the bench. He’ll probably get some minutes in what’s sure to be a blowout win in the team’s exhibition against Catawba. Beyond that, he should receive some minutes in early nonconference games against teams like St. Mary’s, Howard and St. Peter’s.

What a dream season might look like

Valmon impresses the coaching staff enough at practice that he carves out some sort of Varun Ram-like defensive role for himself.

This player wants to become a basketball coach or a police detective.
