He was one of my favs growing up, it's cool that he's doing well.
When I first heard about coach Szefc leaving I was miffed. Not at him. He was very successful here and deserves the kind of salary that isn't presently possible at Maryland. Best wishes to a coach that took Maryland baseball places it had never been
No, I was initially miffed at Maryland Athletics. The department had shot its wad on football and men's basketball, two sports that have very little to show for the last 10 years. Being quite frank, Maryland was lucky to achieve its recent success in baseball, doing it on a dime. Just go out to the ballpark; you'll know what I mean.
But the real culprit is Title IX. It mandates that equal expenditures be made for mens and womens sports, regardless of how much following and/or revenue each generates. This handcuffs schools in the amount of money they can divert to men's non-revenue sports. So even if Maryland wanted to hike the salary of its baseball coach and upgrade facilities, they'd have to make a commensurate allocation to women's sports.
Maryland could have continued success in baseball. However, that would entail either the revenue sports generating more cash than is currently being done, or getting a major donor.
We shouldn't have to lose a coach the caliber of John Szefc. And by the way, give coach Tillman a healthy raise while you're at it..
I disagree with Coach Frese. CCJKEN1 on Twitter. Chocolate City Jordanaire on RealGM

'Moving to a compensatory system will cost NCAA of it's soul' Former U.S. Congressman and Maryland MBB player Tom McMillen currently heads LEAD1, a PAC lobbying on behalf of the Power 5 conferences against a compensatory system for NCAA athletes. He covers that and more with Andy Katz and Rick Klein.
Perfect Game, a highly respected college baseball site, has named Maryland's Kevin Smith to their first team preseason All-American team. Smith was a previous Freshman All-American and enters his junior season as a top 100 draft prospect.
Prefect Game also gives Maryland the #23 ranking in their preseason poll.
Former Terp linebacker Cole Farrand helped rescue a neighbor from his home as it burned to the ground. Pretty amazing story.
