I started this annual series a few years back after someone commented that Maryland had more than a few national championships since joining the B1G, and 6 conference championships in WBB alone. Add to that a whole discussion on OTE about whether or not Maryland is a worthy addition to the conference, and I wanted numbers. Might have to blow it all up and start from scratch after next year when the California schools join in.
National Championships
Here is the list of Big Ten schools with national championships in any sport since the 2014-2015 academic year, the year Maryland joined the B1G (the list of the sports/years they won is at the end).
1) Penn State: 8 (3 sports)
T2) Maryland: 6 (3 sports)
T2) Ohio State: 6 (5 sports)
T4) Nebraska: 4 (2 sports)
T4) Wisconsin: 4 (2 sports)
T6) Minnesota: 2 (1 sport)
T6) Northwestern: 2 (2 sports)
T8) Iowa: 1
T8) Michigan: 1
T8) Michigan State: 1
Big Ten Championships
Some notes on B1G Championships; I counted them as the B1G counts them. If you finish the regular season in first place (or win the football championship game), you're the champion. Even if you tie for first, you get credit for a whole championship. Tournament Winners are not Conference Champions. I did not include affiliate teams (though Notre Dame won Men's Ice Hockey once, and Johns Hopkins won Men's Lacrosse twice). Now that that's been covered, here's the list of B1G schools ranked by number of conference championships (as with the NCs, the lists of which sports and which years is at the end)
T1) Ohio State: 49
T1) Michigan: 49
3) Maryland: 30
T4) Penn State: 19
T4) Minnesota: 19
T4) Wisconsin: 19
T7) Illinois: 14
T7) Indiana: 14
T7) Michigan State: 14
10) Iowa: 13
T11) Nebraska: 9
T11) Northwestern: 9
13) Purdue: 3
14) Rutgers: 1
Here's how the schools breakdown when looking at the number of sports in which they've claimed at least one B1G Championship:
T1) Ohio State: 17
T1) Michigan: 17
3) Minnesota: 11
4) Penn State: 10
T5) Iowa: 7
T5) Indiana: 7
T5) Maryland: 7
T5) Michigan State: 7
T9) Northwestern: 6
T9) Illinois: 6
T9) Wisconsin: 6
12) Nebraska: 5
13) Purdue: 4
14) Rutgers: 1
For the "Football is all that matters" crowd, here are the standings there:
1) Ohio State: 5
T2) Michigan: 2
T2) Michigan State: 1
T2) Penn State: 1
T5) everyone else: 0
And I'll add Men's Basketball, since that's the other sport most people tend to care most about.
T1) Michigan State: 3
T1) Wisconsin: 3
T1) Purdue: 3
T4) Illinois: 1
T4) Indiana: 1
T4) Maryland: 1
T4) Michigan: 1
T8) everyone else: 0
And here's the breakdown of sports and years won by school.
