Offseason talk page! The previous one is here.
Memorial Day has come & gone! It's June, the school year has ended, and summertime is upon us. Let's advance the scholly chart to show what the student-athletes are "rising" as for the upcoming 2023-24 season. (Previous versions of this chart in earlier fanposts listed the student-athletes' "year" for the 2022-23 school year, just ended.)
For clarity I dropped the walk-ons from the list. No disrespect, walk-ons, your contributions are important and appreciated. It's just that it's a list of scholarship spots. The Portal-incoming guys have their old team listed in the "minutes" entry.

At the risk of being premature (again!), it looks like This Is The Team for the upcoming season. I figure that roster breaks down into positions like this:
(ordered by class rather than any clue about depth chart)
Guards: Young, Long, Chance, Lamothe
Wings: Batchelor, Traoré, DHS
Forwards: Scott, Geronimo, Kaiser
Centers: Juju, CSR, Pierce
Each major position-group (lumping wings & forwards together) is headed by one returning unquestioned starter. And after that: pure chaos. The only portal arrival I'm sure will see significant minutes, is Geronimo. The only incoming freshman I'm sure will get significant playing time is DHS. I mean, I'm pretty confident about Kaiser & Lamothe seeing some burn; but I'm really sure about DHS.
Do you see the positional breakdown differently? Maybe you see DHS as a three (his position in HS)? Or you have Pierce red-shirting and Traoré as a backup five? Honestly, I"m probably trying to be too clever putting Traoré at Wing, and it would be more accurate to swap him & Kaiser. Other thoughts on roster configuration?
Here's the assistant coaching staff, which has a new configuration:
Assistant | Was | Is |
---|---|---|
David Cox |
Maryland (URI) |
Maryland |
Mike Jones |
Va Tech |
Maryland |
Greg Manning |
Maryland DOBO |

They've also hired a new Director of Player Personnel:
Baltimore native Ricky Harris is our new Director of Player Personnel!

If anyone knows what a "Director of Player Personnel" does on a college basketball team, please explain it to me in the comments. Actually that's not necessary, this has already been explained to my satisfaction in the previous talk thread. I'm really just showing off that I've figured out how to embed tweets.

Okay: enough portal crap and coaching carousel. In the Summer a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of RECRUITING!
REEEEEEEE CREEWWWWWWW T IIIING!
Recruiting! AAU summer tournaments, rankings shifts, coach sightings, leans, rumors, crystal balls. Kevin Willard's first full recruiting cycle yielded a bonanza. But what have you done for me lately? 2024 IS NOW. Can the recruiting momentum be extended and built-upon? Will the Maryland program take another step forward?? Is Queen gonna sign??? Daquan Davis??? Who else????
BRING ALL OF THE RECRUITING NEWS.
The early signing period for student-athletes enrolling in the 2024-25 year runs November 8 thru November 15. The regular signing period starts next April 17 (2024 and runs thru May 15. Official signing date info for all sports can be found here or here.
By the way: just because I am a chauvinist asshole who mostly thinks about the mens game, does not mean that talk about the (fantastic!) Maryland womens program is not welcome here. If you find any interesting news on Brenda's Broads, by all means bring it.
Plus whatever else there is to talk about in the rich college basketball landscape.
We'll try to keep a "current" fanpost up for however long the comments stay active (about 3 weeks?), or until the number of comments gets too big to manage (can we hit a thousand again?), or the talk page starts to get buried down the page, or whatever. Then start a new one.
Let's tawk!
