Former Maryland football running back Javon Leake signed with the Detroit Lions Wednesday. He’ll likely serve as a depth player for his new team in the backfield.
Leake came out of college as an undrafted rookie and has spent time with both the Washington Football Team and the New York Giants in the NFC East. He most recently played for Washington, where he played one NFL game in which he totaled six special teams snaps against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 14 back in 2020.
Leake went back and forth between Washington’s practice squad last season, and then the Football Team let Leake go in the spring to cap off his short stint with the team.
Despite being listed as a running back, Leake does most of his damage on the special teams unit. He was named the 2019 Rodgers-Dwight Big Ten Return Specialist of the Year and was listed as a 2019 First Team All-Big Ten Return Specialist.
