Welcome back to ouTTakes, a podcast that’s here to discuss Maryland sports from an inside perspective. Our goal of the podcast is to shine a different light on Terps sport figures and allow you to get to know them as people.

This time, I sat down with Marty McNair, the father of Maryland football offensive lineman Jordan McNair, who died after suffering a heat stroke during an offseason workout in 2018.

We talked about the recent work of the Jordan McNair Foundation and had a candid conversation about how the family has continued to deal with the tragic loss. We also discussed the Jordan McNair Safe and Fair Play Act, which recently went through a third reading in both the House of Delegates and the state Senate. The act will require athletic departments to implement guidelines to prevent, assess, and treat serious sports-related conditions, and it also assures student-athletes rights to profit off their name, image and likeness.

Update April 8: The Maryland House of Delegates passed the Jordan McNair Safe and Fair Play Act by a 131-6 margin.
