Maryland Football Fall Camp 1.0

Maryland football will open fall camp on August 2. Believe we should have a separate thread for all roster / positional battles, general team happenings leading up to the season.

The first practice will be open to the media only during the individual periods near the beginning of practice, while as always it will be closed to fans. First-year coach Michael Locksley will also hold a press conference on August 2 as part of the program’s media day. Offensive coordinator Scottie Montgomery, defensive coordinator Jon Hoke and select players are scheduled to speak as well.

Camp opens less than a month before the season opener against Howard on August 31. The Terps welcome a number of players who didn’t participate in spring practice, including highly-touted transfers Josh Jackson (Virginia Tech), Shaq Smith (Clemson) and Tyler Mabry (Buffalo), as well as the entire 18-man freshman class. Spring practice focused on installing new offensive and defensive systems, so the next month will be more of a proving ground for players. Jackson is expected to battle Tyler DeSue, Tyrrell Pigrome and Max Bortenschlager for the starting quarterback job, while there’s also expected to be heavy competition at wide receiver and along the defensive line. Other position groups -- running backs, tight end and offensive line in particular -- are more solidified.

Freshmen who could make an immediate impact include defensive back Nick Cross, who could compete for a starting job, and potential Wade Lees replacements Anthony Pecorella and Colton Spangler. Top-500 recruits Isaiah Hazel, Lance LeGendre and Cortez Andrews are other first-year players to keep an eye on.
