Let’s be honest

Maryland Basketball is having a hard time establishing an identity in the B1G. But the bigger issue is that Maryland Basketball fans are having an even harder time! There is no more Duke or UNC games to look forward too. No more Coach K or Good Ole Roy to yell at from the stands or your couch. The days of Lefty and Gary strolling up and down the sidelines, pulling off upsets of #1 teams. Unfortunately that is the days of past and now we are stuck stuck with watching games against teams in a conference that we continue to get made as the kid not from around here.

Other Maryland sports seem to had little trouble with the transfer in conferences. Teams like Men’s Scocer, Field Hockey, Women’s Basketball, Baseball and both Lacrosse teams have seamlessly implanted themselves in the top tier of the conference with little debate. Football, Wrestling have taken a step backwards understandably with facing an extremely harder schedule than the days of the ACC. Women’s Soccer and Softball, well they weren’t and still aren’t good.

So let’s get back to the team that drives the Terp Nation, the men’s basketball team. Just as any other fanbsse when the team is going good, the players are playing great, when they’re not, the coach gets the blame. When the results are subpar, as in missing the NCAA, the call for firing the Coach comes up....a lot! Comparing one Coach to another is never a good idea, especially so when you’re comparing him to 2 HOF coaches. Turgeon took over a basketball program reeling from multiple missed tourney bids, a change of conference in the near future and a roster full of problematic or untalented players.

Since the hire, the struggles were real early on, suspensions, subpar performances, being entirely overmatched talent wise and everything in between. Than comes Melo and all is right again, but the hunger for a Final Four grew quickly and maybe at a unrealistic pace. Once the Melo chapter ended early, the second swarm of youthful struggles began, injuries and several underperforming results caused Maryland to be on the wrong side of March Madness again.

Now in 2019, the team is 17-6, several quality wins, several road wins and again several blown opportunists against big time teams and oh yeah Illinois. Again the call for Turgeon is at its highest in a season that saw our best pro prospect stay and another 4 year guy, impress so much leaving early and showing why in the Pros. According to multiple sources Maryland is the 3rd to 5th youngest team out of 310+ Division 1 teams. Let that stat digest for a second. A team tabbed to finish middle of the pack and not make the tourney is in great standing to make it. Yet it’s not good enough for most fans especially on here. Turgeon has not coached well many times in the past, but this year is far from that being true. The Terps literally have 1, yes 1 player that has more than 2 years experience at major D1 games (Cowan) with everyone else younger. That’s tough to go on the road in a conference that never wanted us and win games. Keep calling for Turgeons head and enjoy a reboot similar to Maryland Football. Grass is always greener, but until Maryland can keep some players for more than 2 seasons we will not live up to the early 2000’s. Just support this team and what they have done and can do. They have talent and there is something special about these young guns.
