20 Years of Maryland Football: From Highest to Lowest Seasons

The 2001 season marks the beginning of my Freshman year and also marks to me as the best season of my adulthood. Next years 2020 season is the 20th season since the last conference championship team the 2001 ACC Champions. There has been a steady decrease in Maryland’s Program to be competitive especially since the switch to the B1G! The Fridge Era came out guns blazing and being able to keep up that level of success was extremely hard based on the lack of University support. Since that Era it’s been a mess of a coaching carousel that has us with possibly the worst coach in program history. Maryland’s on the verge of finishing off a extremely disappointing season in which shown them ranked for the first time in a decade and now starring at a 7 game losing streak with many 25+ point blowout losses. Let’s face it, (Not much of a) Coach Locksley is going to be back for next season despite showing a true lack of leadership, which seems to be the norm among Maryland Administration.

So with the 2001 Season being the best season, does this year mark the worst season in program history? Or will it be next year? Here’s a list of the worst seasons since the last Cahmpionship team:

2011 Season - Record 2 - 10, Randy Edsall’s First Season as HC. Highs, Maryland beat Miami in the season opener and debuted the Maryland Pride UA Uni’s and especially the Helmet. Lows, the rest of the season. Maryland had only 1 more win against FCS Towson. Lost 8 games by 10+ points and 4 of those games by 20+ points. 2nd time in program history Maryland lost 10 games in a season.

2009 Season - Record 2 - 10, The season that most likely got Fridge’s contract non-renewed. Highs, none! Lows, beating James Madison in OT, losing to MTSU 32-31 and closing the season out with a 7 game losing streak. Despite 10 losses in the season Maryland was extremely competitive throughout the season. Of the 10 losses, 7 of them were by 10 points or less and 5 were by 7 points or less. Record speaks for itself, but this team were a play here or there away from being bowl eligible.

2015 Season - Record 3 - 9, Rockin Randy’s last season and Locks Interim debut. Highs, Randy being fired and the throwback jerseys in the Penn State game and that game itself was enjoyable 31-30 loss in Baltimore. Lows, the programs roster may have been the worst based on talent wise since prior to Fridges first year. 5 games of 20+ point losses.

2019 Season - Record 3 - 7, most likely 3 - 9, Locks first official year as HC. Highs, being ranked for the first time in a decade after 2-0 start. Lows, the rest of the season. Started with a substandard loss to Temple, who made our offense look lost. The lowest point may not have occurred yet, but it will be hard to top the Friday Night Lights game vs PSU. Getting absolutely demolished at home in front of a sold out overflowed crowd on National TV, 59-0. The players have quit in the first half of almost every game since the Penn State game. Sure they beat Rutgers, but their program threw the towel in when they fired their coach and benched their only good players so they could redshirt. Ohio State made a nice statement as well with putting up 72 points. 5 losses by 25+ points, 3 losses by 40+ points and 2 losses by 50+ points. Side note we still have 2 games left.

All those seasons shown had Maryland at 1 conference win. My vote is by far this season due to the momentum built by Canada last year, a great core of talented players coming back, several solid transfer coming in and a solid recruiting class. No one saw this coming outside of the fact Mike Locksley is not able to lead a program. He can recruit (at a blue blood program) and ride the coattails of a coach like Saban, but he by no means can coach. Locks is 6 - 38 with no signs or turning it around. Will this season or next season be the worst in program history. I feel like after next season Locks will no longer be Maryland’s HC and deservingly so.
