Wednesday marked Big Ten men’s basketball media day, and a couple of Terps were honored by the conference.
Senior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. and sophomore forward Jalen Smith were named to the 2019-20 Preseason All-Big Ten Team, with the former as an unanimous selection.
It’s the second consecutive honor for Cowan. Last year, he earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Second Team, making both the media and coach’s lists. It was for good reason, as Cowan averaged 15.6 points, 4.4 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game while shooting 39.3 percent from the field.
As for Smith, it’s his first such accolade after turning in an impressive freshman season a year ago. The 6’10 big man averaged 11.7 points per game while adding 6.8 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and a 49.2 shooting percentage. With Bruno Fernando gone to the NBA, Smith will have to be the main option in the post for Maryland this season.
Together, the duo is expected to be big leaders for Maryland basketball, at least in terms of on-court production. Cowan will be tasked with facilitating to the rest of the rotation as well as scoring at a high rate, while Smith — with a lot of added weight to his frame — could feasibly lead the team in scoring, rebounding, shooting percentage and blocks.
