Jordan McNair Death

The past weekend has not been good for Maryland football, but I feel like there are lots of opinions being tossed about and not much in the way of facts regarding why Jordan McNair died. Here are the facts as I understand them:

Jordan suffered heat stroke during a team workout in May

The workout was the first in approximately a month with coaches present and directing the workout

The temperature on the day of the workout was 82 degrees

The players were not in pads during the workout

The workout started at 4:15 and Jordan started having problems at the completion of the 100 yard sprints at approximately 5 PM

911 was dialed a few minutes before 6 PM

There are no other reports of players having difficulty with heat during the workout

Coach Durkin and Coach Court ran challenging workouts for the players

Players that missed or could not complete workouts were penalized

And in my opinion, the team trainers would not punish Jordan if they realized he was suffering from heat stroke

If you accept my opinion, then there has to be a reason for the trainers to not suspect heat stroke and here goes my explanation:

Jordan was suffering a bad virus or flu where he had a 102 to 103 degree fever on the day of workout. Late May into June is when summer viruses start affecting everyone in Maryland. Having a fever puts you at much greater risk for getting heat stroke. I know lots of people at work who were very sick during that time period. He was a college kid so he figured he could tough out the workout and he didn’t want to get penalized for missing the workout so he went and didn’t tell any of the coaches he was sick. By the time he realized how serious his condition was, it was too late for him to explain what was happening.

The coaching staff knew the workout was the first in a month so some players might be out of shape. They saw Jordan struggling and figured he slacked off and didn’t work out for the past month. It wasn’t particularly hot and no other players were struggling so heat stroke didn’t enter their minds. They continued to push him until it was too late. They finally realized what was happening and then they called 911.

Assuming my hypothesis is correct, is the coaching/training staff at fault? Is heat stroke common for football players not wearing pads when the temperature is in the low 80s? Did any of Jordan’s roommates report he was sick?
