Maryland basketball missed out on five-star forward Jaren Jackson Jr., who committed to Michigan State over the Terps and a host of other programs on Thursday. With Jackson out of the picture, here are the recruits Maryland is trying to land in the class of 2017:
We'll update this as we get deeper into the recruiting cycle.
Point Guard
Trevon Duval
High School/Location: IMG Academy/Bradenton, FL
247Sports Composite rating: five stars, No. 5 overall, No. 1 point guard
Offers: Arizona, Baylor, Kansas, Maryland, Syracuse, Villanova, Duke, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Memphis, Miami, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Southern Methodist, Texas Tech, UCLA, Virginia Tech
Schools in the Mix: California, Oregon, Kansas, USC, Villanova, St John's, Arizona, Seton Hall, Maryland
Where Maryland Stands: Trevon Duval has been on Turgeon's radar for years now. He lit up the numerous camps and tournaments he's attended, displaying his quick handles and impressive ability to get to the basket. Maryland's standing with Duval looks better than it was just a few weeks ago. Before Duval cut UCLA off his top 10 list, the 247Sports Crystal Ball had Duval overwhelmingly leaning toward the Bruins.
Luis Hurtado
High School/Location: The Sagemont School/Decatur, GA
247Sports Composite ranking: three stars, No. 261 overall, No. 56 point guard
Offers: Florida State, Georgia, Maryland, UAB, USC, George Mason, Louisville, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, USF, Xavier
Schools in the Mix: Florida State, Georgia, Maryland, UAB
Where Maryland Stands: There hasn't been too much buzz around this three-star recruit, and Crystal Ball predicts UAB as Hurtado's landing spot. Maryland is one of the few powerhouses that has offered the point guard. Hurtado has kept Maryland in his sights as a "protege" of Grievis Vasquez. There isn't any information suggesting the two camps are in regular communication, but he'd be a nice grab for the Terps if he does commit.
Shooting Guard
M.J. Walker
High School/location: Jonesboro/Lithia Springs, GA
247Sports Composite rating: five stars, No. 23 overall, No. 4 shooting guard
Offers: Florida State, Kansas, Maryland, Ohio State, Auburn, Memphis, Mississippi State, West Virginia, Georgia Tech, Syracuse
Schools in the mix: Florida State, Maryland, Ohio State, Kansas
Where Maryland stands: M.J. Walker is one of the Terps' top recruits, and he is 100% predicted to commit to Maryland, per 247Sports Crystal Ball. That is not a guarantee that he commits, but there is a sizable chance he ends up in College Park. Walker is a freak athletic with a wicked jump shot. So athletic, in fact, that he received offers from Michigan, Clemson, Auburn, and more powerhouses...for football. He'd be a big time get for Turgeon and Co.
D.J. Harvey
High School/location: DeMatha Catholic/Hyattsville, MD
247Sports composite rating: four stars, No. 41 overall, No. 7 shooting guard
Offers: Arizona, Louisville, Notre Dame, Texas, Alabama, Duke, Connecticut, Maryland, Oklahoma, UCLA, Villanova, Georgetown, Houston, Memphis, N.C. State, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Wake Forest, Winthrop, Xavier
Schools in the mix: Arizona, Louisville, Notre Dame, Texas, Alabama, Duke
Where Maryland stands: D.J. Harvey may be the one that got away for the Terps, just like his teammate Markelle Fultz was last year. The DeMatha product has kept his hometown school on his list for now, but he has focused more on schools like Notre Dame, Arizona and Duke. Harvey is an athletic shooting guard who has fluctuated in ESPN and 247Sports rankings over the years, but now he's the No. 1 recruit in Maryland, just as Fultz was before he committed to Washington. It'd be a big surprise if he ends up in College Park.
Small Forward
Jordan Tucker
High School/location: Wheeler/Marietta, GA
247Sports Composite rating: four stars, No. 46 overall, No. 10 small forward
Offers: Arizona, Indiana, Louisville, Maryland, Syracuse, USC, Villanova, Duke, Alabama, Connecticut, Dayton, Detroit, Georgetown, Kansas, Manhattan, Memphis, Miami, Oklahoma Providence, St. John's, St. Peter's, Xavier
Schools in the mix: Duke, Maryland, Syracuse, UConn, Indiana, Villanova, USC, Louisville
Where Maryland stands: Maryland is not a strong contender for Tucker, as Crystal Ball projects him to play for Jim Boeheim at Syracuse.
Nicolas Claxton
High School/location: Legacy Charter/Greenville, SC
247Sports Composite rating: three stars, No. 215 overall, No. 45 small forward
Offers: Georgia, Baylor, Florida State, N.C. State, Maryland, Arizona, Clemson, Memphis, Notre Dame, Temple, USC, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest
Schools in the mix: Georgia, Baylor, Florida State, N.C. States Maryland
Where Maryland stands: Nicolas Claxton isn't that highly touted of a prospect, but he is worth keeping on the radar for the Terps. The Crystal Ball predicts Georgia for this 6'9 forward, but N.C. State and Florida State remain strong in the race.
Power Forward
Billy Preston
High School/location: Oak Hill Academy/Mouth of Wilson, VA
247Sports Composite rating: five stars, No. 12 overall, No. 5 power forward
Offers: USC, Arizona, Kansas, Maryland, Arizona State, Baylor, Connecticut, Oregon, SMU, Texas, UCLA, Utah
Schools in the mix: USC, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, NC State
Where Maryland stands: Billy Preston recently released a final five after cutting off Arizona from his top four and adding Indiana and N.C. State. A teammate of Trevon Duval, Preston has been a top prospect for years and has always kept Maryland on his list.
Center
Ikechukwu Obiagu
High School/location: Greenforest Mccalep Christian Academy
247Sports Composite rating: four stars, No. 47 overall, No. 4 center
Offers: Maryland, Arizona, Baylor, Florida State, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Alabama, Auburn, Butler, Cincinnati, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisville, Memphis, Missouri, Purdue, Tennessee, Texas, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Wake Forest, Long Beach State
Schools in the mix: Maryland, Georgia Tech, Long Beach State, Baylor, Florida State, N.C. State
Where Maryland stands: Obiagu told InsideMdSports his visit to College Park "exceeded my expectations," and all indications are that Maryland holds a strong position in the pursuit of the four-star center. He added that "any visit from here on out will have to blow away the visit to Maryland." Obiagu recently released a top six, adding in Long Beach State in the mix. His Crystal Ball leans toward the Terps, with Baylor and Florida State also getting votes.
Ira Lee
High School/location: Prolific Prep/San Pedro, CA
247Sports Composite rating: four stars, No. 58th, No. 6 center
Offers: Arizona, California, Maryland, Oregon, Texas, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Oklahoma State, USC, Arizona State, Connecticut
Schools in the mix: Arizona, California, Maryland, Oregon, Texas
Where Maryland stands: Lee's Crystal Ball leans strongly toward Arizona. Cal remains in the mix since Lee was born and plays in California. Maryland and Texas seem to be the only two schools he is seriously considering that are not on the West Coast. Don't completely count out Lee going to Maryland, but it seems likely he'll stay close to home.
Combo Guard
Darryl Morsell
High School/location: Mount Saint Joseph/Baltimore, MD
247Sports Composite rating: four stars, No. 77 overall, No. 4 combo guard
Offers: Dayton, Maryland, Notre Dame, Villanova, Virginia Tech, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Davidson, George Mason, Kansas State, Pittsburgh, Temple, UCF, West Virginia
Schools in the mix: Dayton, Maryland, Notre Dame, Villanova, Virginia Tech
Where Maryland stands: Crystal Ball predicts the local guard will stay home and go to Maryland. Dayton is also pursing Morsell, but the Terps are overwhelming favorites here.
David Beatty
High School/location: St. Benedict's Preparatory School/Philadelphia, PA
247Sports Composite rating: four stars, No. 124 overall, No. 6 combo guard
Offers: Connecticut, Georgetown, Indiana, La Salle, Maryland, Florida State, Kansas State, Memphis, Miami, Penn State, Siena, South Carolina, St. Joseph's, VCU, Virginia, Virginia Tech
Schools in the mix: Connecticut, Georgetown, Indiana, La Salle, Maryland
Where Maryland stands: Beatty recently cut his list to Maryland, UConn, Georgetown, La Salle and Indiana. been pushing hard to secure Maryland's spot. Turgeon recently traveled to Pennsylvania to watch Beatty play, according to IMS.
