3-star DB Derrek Pitts to commit Wednesday, with Maryland football reportedly a finalist

The Terps are thin at safety, and he’d help.

West Virginia defensive back Derrek Pitts will be announcing his commitment on Wednesday, and Maryland football is one of five schools he’s considering, Rivals’ Adam Friedman reported Sunday night. The Terps join West Virginia, Florida, Penn State and Tennessee in his list of finalists.

Pitts is the No. 2 player in West Virginia and the No. 29 athlete in the class of 2017, according to the 247Sports Composite. The Terps have yet to receive a commitment from a player in his state during this recruiting cycle. 247Sports lists Pitts as an athlete/safety and Rivals lists him as a safety, so it appears that is the position he’d play at Maryland.

Maryland already has four-star Deon Jones and three-star Fofie Bazzie already committed in the class of 2017 at corner, but does not yet have a commitment from a safety.

Pitts was invited to June’s The Opening showcase in Oregon, along with Maryland defensive end commit Joshua Kaindoh.
