Maryland men's and women's lacrosse advance to NCAA quarterfinals

No. 1 Women's Lacrosse

Megan Whittle scored a team-high four goals, and Maryland used a big first half to push past Johns Hopkins. Bryn Boucher and Taylor Cummings each recorded hat tricks, and Maryland's defense never allowed the Blue Jays to find a rhythm on offense.

Cummings also added three ground balls, four draw controls and four caused turnovers while fellow senior captain, and defender, Alice Mercer caused a game-high five turnovers and picked up four ground balls.

The Terps didn't blow the Blue Jays away on the draw --they tied 12-12-- but they came out with good energy and pressured Johns Hopkins into making a lot of mistakes. The Blue Jays were called for 44 fouls, and the Terrapins did a great job of maintaining their composure throughout the game.

The Terps will host UMass in the NCAA quarterfinals this weekend.

Title Chances: 5. The top-seeded Terps managed to beat Johns Hopkins convincingly despite not playing their best lacrosse. They are one step closer to their third straight national title.

No. 1 Men's Lacrosse

Austin Henningsen was dominant on faceoffs, and Maryland played well on the offensive and defensive ends in their first-round win over Quinnipiac. The Terrapins won all 12 faceoffs in the first half and staked themselves to a 7-3 lead at halftime. They outscored the Bobcats 5-1 in the third quarter to help put the game away.

Matt Rambo had three goals and two assists while Bryan Cole and Henry West each added three goals and an assist.

The top-seeded Terps will head to Providence this weekend to face eighth-seeded Syracuse in the NCAA quarterfinals.

Baseball

Maryland baseball's biggest weakness, inconsistency, reared its ugly head once again this week as the Terrapins lost to West Virginia and dropped two of three to Rutgers. The Terrapins have put themselves in a very bad position where they might not even qualify for the Big Ten Tournament. Their RPI is horrendous, and they would have have to win the Big Ten Tournament just to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. With only three games left to play, that scenario looks highly unlikely.

Record this week: 1-3 (4-1 loss to West Virginia, 5-4 loss to Rutgers, 7-5 loss to Rutgers and 6-0 win over Rutgers)

Record this season: (26-24, 11-10)

Grade for the week: F. Maryland needed to win its series against Rutgers this weekend and came out and lose the first two games. The Terps are in dire straights and might not even make the Big Ten Tournament.

Title Chances: 0. Maryland is not going to win the Big Ten title.

Track and Field

Maryland women's track and field took 11th out of 13 teams at the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The men's team failed to record a point and finished in last place.

Chioma Onyekwere led the way for Maryland, taking second in the shot put. She earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors. Lisa Meneau took fourth in the 400 meter hurdles, and Micha Powell finished in fourth in the 400 meters.
