College basketball bracketology: Maryland climbing to a No. 2 seed in latest projections

New, 111 comments

After defeating Nebraska on the road and Purdue at home, Maryland continues its slow move up the seeding lines.

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Maryland continued its winning ways over the past week, and as a result, the Terps are now projected as a No. 2 seed in many of the major mock brackets.

Here is the latest on where Maryland stands, based on RPI rankings and Ken Pomeroy's projections:

No. 4 overall
Top 50 wins: Iowa (8), Purdue (24), UConn (47)
Loses outside Top 50: Michigan (55)

No. 6 overall
Top 50 wins: Iowa (2), Purdue (17), UConn (21)
Loses outside Top 50: None

I don't think Maryland deserves a No. 1 seed as things stand today. But its continuing to climb in both RPI and KenPom. I think sometimes people get too focused on the number of top 50 wins and on bad loses, etc. I don't understand the argument that Maryland has only two top-50 RPI wins but then seemingly ignoring the fact that Maryland, itself, is ranked No. 4 in the RPI rankings.

On to the latest projections:

Mr. Bracketology himself has Maryland as a No. 2 seed in the East, where Villanova claims the No. 1 seed.

Stewart Mandel still has Maryland as a No. 3 seed because the Terps only have two top-50 RPI wins. Maryland has a chance to add to that in the final weeks of the season, but that is definitely something that could keep the Terps at a No. 3 seed this March.

Maryland is still a No. 3 seed in their latest mock bracket, trailing North Carolina who remains as a No. 2 seed, despite losing two of its last three and narrowly avoiding a loss to lowly Boston College on Tuesday. Bracket Projections - Men's Basketball (2015-2016)
