Maryland football recruiting roundup: New offers, Rashad Wheeler commits to Pittsburgh

The Terps were in the running late for Wheeler, but playing for the home state schools proved to be too much to overcome.

After losing out on highly touted Gilman (MD) defensive tackle Ellison Jordan, head coach Randy Edsall went back to the drawing board to recruit quality players that could fill that empty void. Central Catholic (PA) senior Rashad Wheeler was viewed as a quality option considering Jordan was verbally committed to Penn State.

Wheeler, a three-star recruit, made the expected choice to stay home and attend Pittsburgh. Penn State was the school labeled by many as the favorite, but with Jordan and Michael Colon on board, the defensive tackle position became too crowded for Wheeler. With the Nittany Lions off the board, Pittsburgh became the clear choice.
