Profiles in Terpage: Lee Shrader

The redshirt freshman will try to win the starting spot at the open punting position this fall.

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Lee Shrader, freshman (RS), punter, No. 38

Stats:

Height: 6'1"

Weight: 215

Collegiate stats: N/A

High school: Warwick (Newport News, VA)

High school stats (Senior Year): 46 punts, 42.3 yards per punt, 62 yards longest punt, 2 for 2 fake punt passes for 1st downs

Composite recruiting rating: 5 stars via Kohl's Kicking

High school highlights:

How'd He Get to College Park?

Shrader was at one point ranked the 2nd best punter in the nation before being bumped down to 11th after his high school team turned out a 0-10 campaign during his senior season. He was a highly coveted punter among DII teams, earning dozens of scholarships, however he wanted to go D1 and eventually chose a preferred walk on spot at Maryland over the same from Penn State and Rutgers. When asked why he chose College Park, Shrader had this to say via Kohl's News:

"Coach Powell is an experienced Special Teams Coordinator with 3 seasons at Maryland, 4 seasons at Clemson and another 13 years of college coaching. He had a top ranked special teams unit last season, and he recruited the best long snapper in the nation [Nate Adams] who it will be great to work with."

Career Highlight:

Was named the best punter in the Hampton Roads region in Virginia for 3 straight years in high school.

Dream Season:

He beats out Nick Rubinowicz and Nick Pritchard for the starting punting spot and moves the Terrapins from 80th in the nation in yards per punt into the top 35.

2015 Prospectus:

With Nate Renfro gone to Tennessee for his last year of eligibility, the Terps will look to find their starting punter in Shrader, Rubinowicz, or Pritchard. With Rubinowicz the only one of the group on scholarship, it's likely he's the favorite. However with this many options at the position, it only takes a couple of shanks for the next guy up to get a chance to impress, something Shrader will have to do if he gets his opportunity.

Up Next

This next player looks to become a household name, even if his last name is already popular thanks to Boy Meets World and The Wonder Years.
