Three-star local defensive back Robbie Robinson committed to Arizona State Saturday, choosing the Sun Devils over fellow finalists Maryland and Virginia. Maryland was never considered a favorite for the prospect, but his recent decision to transfer to local powerhouse DeMatha and the inclusion of the Terps in his finalist group gave some hope the program might have a chance.
Randy Edsall and Maryland have attempted to solve the team's dangerously low secondary depth by adding commitments from low-level prospects Mike Viti and Silas Kelly, but Robinson gave the Terrapins an opportunity to land a truly high-value local recruit. Rated a high three-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite, the 5'8, 160-pound Robinson ranks as the No. 24 athlete in the country and the No. 14 player in Virginia (he's transferring to DeMatha from Phoebus High School).
Besides Arizona State, Maryland and Virginia, Robinson claims offers from Clemson, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State and Virginia Tech, among others. The Terrapins' top defensive back target, four-star Avalon athlete Trevon Diggs, remains on the board. No decision timeline has been set.
