One of the nation's top available linebackers will be headed to the ACC, as Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy prospect Rahshaun Smith committed to Clemson during a ceremony Thursday evening. A Baltimore native, Smith transferred to IMG from St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) in January, and was previously at Calvert Hall.
Maryland was an early suitor of Smith, who kept much of his decision process under wraps -- including which hats he would be bringing to the ceremony. Florida, Oklahoma, Alabama and Maryland ended up making the table as finalists, while the Tigers got his commitment with a hat stowed away under the table. Despite his best efforts, this came as no surprise -- 22 of the 25 Crystal Ball predictions had Smith going to Clemson.
The 6'3, 225-pound Smith is rated a four-star recruit by the 247Sports Composite, ranking as the No. 48 player in the country, the No. 3 weak-side defensive end in the class of 2016 and the 11th-best player in the state of Florida. He was not considered a part of "the movement," especially after his departure to Florida, and a Maryland commitment never seemed likely for the prospect.
