For the second time in five weeks Maryland sophomore Mike Shawaryn was named the Big Ten's Pitcher of the Week. Shawaryn's first honor came in the season's second week when he pitched seven innings of shutout ball against South Alabama. That week fellow Terrapin Kevin Smith also picked up the Freshman of the Week Award. This week, Shawaryn is the Terps' lone award winner.
Shawaryn's performance Friday night against the Princeton Tigers earned him his second Pitcher of the Week Award. His performance in the 15-0 Terrapins rout set Maryland onto a three game sweep of their Ivy League foes.
Improving his record to a perfect 4-0 on the season, the sophomore limited the Tigers to just six hits over seven innings of shutout ball. He walked two and struck out 11 increasing conference leading total to 41 strikeouts for the season. The seven shutout innings lowered his ERA to 2.84. Shawaryn has won four of his five starts and opposing hitters are batting just .189 against the New Jersey right hander.
The Terps, winners of five straight, travel to Elon for a pair of mid week games with the Phoenix before returning to College Park where they will open Big Ten Play with a three game series against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
