After numerous cancellations, the Terps finally got to play a midweek game. This enabled Jake Drossner (0-0) a chance to start and possibly reclaim his weekend role. Twelve games into the season and Drossner has thrown only 2.1 innings. The Richmond Spiders (6-5) were sending out junior RHP Peter Bayer (0-0, 4.50 era) who's seen even less action than Drossner: 2.0 innings.
This game was originally scheduled to be played at Shipley Field. But weather conditions forced the game to be held at Harford Community College's field. The Terps have not had a "home" game yet this season.
Teams trade leads
Kevin Martir drew a two-out walk and Jose Cuas singled through the left side. Tim Lewis hit a nubber that Bayer bobbled and then threw wildly to first: Martir scored and the Terps were up 1-0.
The Spiders struck back in the second. The bases were loaded via two walks and an infield single. With two outs, Michael Morman crushed a two-run double to put the Spiders on top 2-1.
Drossner's struggles continued in the third inning. Matt Dacey was HBP and went to second on a ground out. Kurtis Brown hit a liner that Drossner knocked down; however, Drossner's throw was in the dirt. Tyler Beckwith laid down a suicide squeeze that went untouched. That brought home the third Spider run.
The Terps tied it up in the bottom of the inning. Cuas singled, and then Lewis hit a run-scoring double. With two outs, Kevin Biondic (making his first collegiate start) hit a shot that just missed going out: Biondic ended up with an RBI triple.
In the fourth Richmond put two runners on second and third via a two-out double and a walk. That brought in Ryan Selmer to pitch. The RS freshman struck out the batter to end the Richmond threat.
The Terps regained the lead in their half of the fourth. Brandon Lowe hit an opposite field double, and then Kevin Smith walked. On an attempted double steal, Lowe was nabbed at third. Martir hit a chopper that the Richmond shortstop misplayed. When the ball went into left field Smith scored, giving the Terps a 4-3 lead.
Taylor Bloom took the mound for the Terps to begin the sixth. He looked sharp, retiring the side in order on two strikeouts and a ground out. In the seventh inning, Bloom only allowed one walk, throwing another scoreless inning. However, the Richmond relievers were also effective, at one point striking out five straight Terrapin batters.
Cuas, Biondic once again provide firepower; Terps break open the game
The Terrapins took a commanding lead in the seventh inning. Martir singled and took second on a passed ball. Cuas hit a shallow fly that fell in, with Martir scoring to make the score 5-3. The Terps scored another run on a double by Biondic. Pinch hitter Jamal Wade got aboard via an error that permitted Biondic to score. After seven innings the Terps led 7-3.
Jared Price set down the Spiders in order in the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, the Terps put up another run on an RBI double by Lewis to lead 8-3. In the ninth Price struck out the side to close out the win.
Selmer got his first collegiate victory to go to 1-0. Overall the Terps stand at 9-4 in 2015.
