What you need to know about Maryland's Junior Day

New, 17 comments

Will the Terrapins pick up a commitment this weekend at one of the 2016 recruiting cycle's biggest events?

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Junior Day is a yearly event held by colleges around the country where they host some of the top high school talent in the area on campus. For Maryland, February 21 is the first of two Junior Days (the second is February 28), and there will be a number of local and national prospects attending.

The Terrapins did not pick up any commitments during last year's festivities -- they had one pledge going into Junior Day season (E.J. Donahue) and didn't pick up another until three months later (Deltron Sands, who ended up signing with Oregon State). Maryland has had a better start to the class this time around, with three locals (4-star Good Counsel recruit Keandre Jones and DeMatha prospects Lorenzo Harrison and DJ Turner) already committed to the Terrapins.

Here's a list of scheduled visitors. A notable contingent is coming in from New Jersey, as well as some of the more important local prospects. Our source for each player (usually a tweet) is linked over their name.

In terms of possible commitments, none jump out as terribly likely. Maryland is in good position with Haskins and Diggs, but Haskins has said he'll make his decision in April and Diggs probably won't decide so soon either. The Terps have stiffer competition for Simms and Upshur, but they're still in a good place with those prospects as well. If any of the more unheralded players get offered, that may be the best shot at a commitment -- we've seen it in previous camps with players like Ty Johnson and Gage Shaffer. We'll keep you updated with news throughout the weekend, and will have another visitors list next week.
