With two 2013 All-Americans on their roster when they entered their first Big Ten gymnastics season, it would have come as little surprise to learn that one of them - Katy Dodds or Stephanie Giameo - had won Maryland's first Big Ten Weekly gymnastics award. But the surprising news came Monday afternoon in the fourth week of the gymnastics season when the conference announced Terrapins freshman Abbie Epperson as the Event Specialist of the Week.
Epperson claimed the award for her personal best 9.90 routine on bars in Maryland's dual meet at Iowa. Her score tied the 10th best in school history and allowed her to claim first place in the event.
The freshman from Allen, Texas, has regularly competed on two events for Maryland - bars and vault. She followed her personal best bar routine by equaling her personal best on vault when she scored a 9.850.
Though they came up just short in the team score, Epperson's efforts helped propel the Terps to their highest score of the young season. The Terps scored 195.275 for the meet. For perspective, in the 2014 season, the Terrapins surpassed the 195.275 team score only three times and two of those came in the two meets immediately preceding the NCAA Tournament.
With their meets at Penn State and Iowa behind them and their scores improving, the Terrapins have passed their first B1G road test. Maryland now returns home to host the nation's fourth ranked squad - the Michigan Wolverines. The meet takes place Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. on the main floor at the Xfinity Center.
