The 2014-15 Maryland women's basketball regular season still has four games remaining, but Thursday afternoon the Big Ten announced the Terrapins' slate of opponents for the 2015-16 season. The conference has chosen to maintain an 18-game schedule.
Wednesday's Maryland Minute linked to a story on our SBNation sister site Land Grant Holy Land suggesting the conference consider establishing protected rivalries. A look at the announced slate of teams shows no steps in that direction -- at least in women's basketball.
In the current season, Maryland played home-and-home series with Indiana, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State and Rutgers. The Terps will play each of those teams only once next season. Instead, Maryland will play a home-and-home series with Michigan, Northwestern, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin. In the current season, the Terrapins played on the road at Michigan, Northwestern and Wisconsin while Ohio State and Purdue came to Xfinity Center without receiving a return visit from Maryland.
In addition to the five home-and-home teams, Minnesota will make its first sojourn to College Park and Terps fans will have a second chance to see Indiana, Michigan State, and Nebraska. Fans will not get to see a rematch with Iowa unless they travel to Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. Visits to Illinois, Penn State and Rutgers round out Maryland's 18 conference games.
Those who prefer graphics to a narrative can use the table below:
