Terrapin Title Tracker

This is your weekly roundup of Maryland non-revenue action. Let's take a look at their chances to win some hardware this season.

Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

#13 Men's Soccer

The Terps have not played consistent soccer since Big Ten play started but they have been somewhat steady. Maryland outshot Northwestern 24-4 and had 13 corners to Northwestern's two. The Wildcats still won the game. That shouldn't happen anywhere but it definitely shouldn't happen at home. If Maryland keeps letting it fly like that, the goals will come.

Record this week: 0-1 (1-0 overtime loss to Northwestern)

Record this season: 4-3-3 (1-1-2)

Grade for the week: D. The Terps have been inconsistent this year and that has led to results such as their loss to Northwestern. Maryland can ill afford to lose games like those if they want to repeat as Big Ten champions and make a deep NCAA Tournament run.

Title chances: 5. Despite their loss, Maryland sits in third place in the standings and is only two points behind Michigan and Penn State. They will get a chance to leap back into first place this week when they take on Penn State in State College.

#8 Field Hockey

Missy Meharg became the fourth Division 1 head coach to reach the 500 career win mark in a win against Miami (Ohio) on Sunday. The Maryland offense is firing on all cylinders and Welma Luus now has six goals in her last four games.

Record this week: 2-0 (5-2 win over Ohio State and 6-2 win over Miami (Ohio))

Record this season: 10-3 (4-0)

Grade for the week: A+. Maryland had another great week.

Title chances: 5. The Terps are undefeated in Big Ten play and have a big game coming up this week when they head to State College to take on Penn State.

Volleyball

Maryland got embarrassed by Northwestern last week in the third and final set of their match, losing 25-9. They didn't show any fight. That was not the case this weekend. Maryland fought tooth and nail but came up short against Indiana and ranked Purdue. After dropping their first set against the Boilermakers, Maryland came back to win the second set, 25-18, before dropping the next two sets 25-17 and 25-23. That shows a team with some talent but more heart.

Record this week: 0-2 (3-1 losses to Indiana and Purdue)

Record this season: 10-8 (0-4)

Grade for the week: C-. The loss against Indiana hurts since they lost their sets 26-24, 25-22, and 25-22. Maryland didn't give up at all in their match against Indiana or Purdue. The Boilermakers had to work for everything they got against the Terps.

Title chances: 0. If this weekend was any indication, Maryland will be competitive in some Big Ten matches this season and they will be incredibly fun to watch in two or three years. However, they have no shot at the Big Ten title this year or next year.

Women's Soccer

Another close loss. Maryland has been shut out four times in their last six games. In their four conference games, they have scored only once (a 2-1 double overtime loss) and been shut out three times. They are not scoring goals and that is causing their very talented back-line to have no margin for error. It doesn't get any easier. The Terps head to State College this week to take on defending Big Ten champ Penn State.

Record this week: 0-1 (1-0 loss to Michigan)

Record this season: 5-7-0 (0-4-0)

Grade for the week: F. The Terps got shut out for the third time in four Big Ten games and still have yet to earn a point. They sit in dead last in the Big Ten standings.

Title chances: 0. Maryland is now in last place in the Big Ten. These close losses are agonizing. If nothing changes, nothing changes. The Terps do not appear built to make a run at the Big Ten title this year. If they don't wake up from their offensive stupor, they may not even make the Big Ten tournament for the second year in a row.
