Maryland basketball recruiting roundup - 4-star 2017 forward to visit for Maryland Madness, heavyweights battle for Wenyen Gabriel

The chase for Wenyen Gabriel, plus other Maryland basketball recruitment notes.

It's a busy time in college basketball recruiting. Here's a roundup of some of the balls Maryland has in the air:

Chase for Wenyen Gabriel

Players are flying off recruiting boards quickly as the end of September nears, and pieces are starting to come together.

It's no secret Maryland is looking strongly at five-star forward Wenyen Gabriel, who would be the prize of Coach Mark Turgeon's recruiting class. Maryland wasn't able to win a commitment right away after Gabriel's official visit earlier this month, and it appears Gabriel's intent on visiting all five of his remaining schools (Maryland, Duke, Kentucky, Providence and UConn) before making his final decision.

Last week Gabriel had in-home visits with UConn on Monday, Duke on Tuesday, and Kentucky Wednesday before going on his second official visit to Kentucky. This began a four-visits-in-four weekends stretch, including Connecticut, Providence and Duke.

In the meantime the two schools Maryland will likely battle most for Gabriel, Duke and Kentucky, have been meeting with other forwards, whose commitments may force Gabriel to push them lower on his list.

Last week Duke saw one of the top players in the recruiting class, Harry Giles, who is considered a lean to play alongside his friend Jayson Tatum, and received a commitment from 4-star forward Javin DeLaurierwho they offered less than two weeks ago. The Blue Devils are making it known they aren't done yet, as Coach Kryzezewski and Assistant Coaches Jeff Capel and Jon Scheyer will visit Gabriel at home in Massachusetts on Wednesday.

Kentucky, who also saw Giles, will wait until October 3rd to hear a final decision on where 5-star forward Miles Bridges will commit. He'll be choosing between Michigan State, Kentucky and Indiana, and recently the Spartans overtook the Wildcats in 247Sports crystal ball.

Jordan Tucker to visit for Maryland Madness

Following an unofficial in-state visit to St. John's, the no. 33 ranked recruit in the class of 2017, Jordan Tucker, will unofficially visit College Park for Magic Maryland Madness on October 17th. Tucker will join 4-star 2016 forward Mario Kegler and 4-star Maryland commit Anthony Cowan who will be on official visits. Tucker is generally unfamiliar with Maryland, and is hearing more from Syracuse and St. John's according to 247Sports' Josh Stirn, but there's enough hype surrounding the likely pre-season top 5 Terrapins to pique high school junior's interest.
