Nick Rubinowicz commits to Maryland: Terps pick up Florida punter

With Nate Renfro gone, he has a chance to compete for playing time right away.

Maryland has added another piece to their 2015 recruiting class, as punter Nick Rubinowicz committed to Maryland, Scout is reporting. The American Heritage School of Boca (Fla.) prospect announced he had been offered a scholarship by the Terrapins earlier Monday.

Rubinowicz was also being targeted by Cal, Virginia Tech and Princeton. He was an all-state punter and AP scholar in high school, earning a 4.5 star rating as both a kicker and a punter from Kohl's Kicking. Maryland has the reigning Lou Groza Award winner returning at kicker, but punter is an open position.

Three-year starter Nate Renfro chose to graduate early and leave the program, leaving the Terrapins with three potential options at the position. Lee Shrader walked on to the team last season and likely redshirted, while Maryland also added New Egypt (N.J.) prospect Nick Pritchard as a walk-on. As the only player on scholarship, Rubinowicz is likely the favorite to win the job (Renfro did as a scholarship freshman), but it will likely be an open competition this spring and summer.
