Three key matchups: what to watch for in the Maryland-USF game

Our three key matchup series continues as the Terps travel to Bull territory.

Marvin Mack vs. L.A. Goree

If you haven't heard about Marvin Mack by now, just know that last Saturday he shredded for 275 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground. The true freshman running back was playing Western Carolina, but we'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he is the real deal. L.A. Goree showed off his leadership and will to put the opposition on the ground in the opening season game against James Madison where he recorded a team high 14 tackles. It will be intriguing to see how well Goree can plug the lane with the explosive freshman trying to encroach.

Jamie Byrd vs. Deon Long

The teammates meet again as USF defensive back Jamie Byrd will likely match up against Terps wideout Deon Long quite a few times. The two were teammates at Iowa Western Community College before each of them landed D1 scholarships. Byrd has a great sense of positioning, which led to his team high 11 tackles and his first Division 1 interception for the Bulls. Long has been a staple in Maryland's offense since transferring from the school, and that will not change this game, as he is expected to get plenty of targets.

South Florida's Defensive Line vs. Maryland's Offensive Line

Collectively, South Florida threw down Western Carolina's quarterback four times in their 36-31 opening game victory over the Catamounts. Maryland's offensive line paved the way for five touchdowns on the ground and 285 yards between all six players that touched the ball. The Terps' o-line didn't allow a sack, but will be facing a much more competitive defensive line, when they travel to Miami. If one or two of the Terps struggle to find rhythm fending off unwanted defensive ends or tackles, don't be surprised if true freshman Damian Prince gets a few snaps.
