Maryland wide receiver Levern Jacobs and linebacker Alex Twine were reportedly involved in a police incident July 19. Twine has been arrested while Jacobs has been summoned to court, according to court records.
Jacobs has been one of Maryland's most impressive players in camp: head coach Randy Edsall has repeatedly praised his and brother Taivon Jacobs's performances at wide receiver, and Levern was pushing for the third starting wide receiver position.
After season-ending injuries to Stefon Diggs and Deon Long, Jacobs stepped up and filled the void, leading the team with 47 receptions and 640 yards. His best performance came against a top-10 Clemson team, catching eight passes for a career-high 158 yards. He also caught seven passes for 100 yards in the Military Bowl loss to Marshall.
Twine has been a pleasant surprise in his time with Maryland, transforming from a lowly-recruited local prospect to a key contributor in each of his three seasons on campus. He is expected to be the primary backup to Matt Robinson at the SAM outside linebacker position and to fill in at middle linebacker after the losses of primary backups Shawn Petty (transfer) and Abner Logan (suspension). He recorded 49 tackles last season, with two-and-a-half for a loss and a fumble forced.
Twine was previously arrested in December 2011 on his 18th birthday for disorderly conduct and failure to obey a police officer. Stubbs reports Twine has a court appearance scheduled for October 3.
If the two miss any significant amount of time, expect either Taivon Jacobs or Marcus Leak to compete for that third starting job. At linebacker, Cavon Walker is listed behind Twine at SAM, and redshirt freshmen Jermaine Carter Jr. and Jalen Brooks should back up the middle linebacking duo of Cole Farrand and L.A. Goree.
