High School Highlights:
How'd He Get to College Park?
In a very roundabout way. Long originally committed to West Virginia before eventually transferring out of the Mountaineer program to play for Mike Locksley when he was still the head coach at New Mexico. After Locksley was let go by New Mexico following Long's redshirt freshman year, in which he racked up 47 receptions for 809 yards and four TDs, Long ended up leaving New Mexico and enrolled at Iowa Western Junior College. There, Long continued to shine, becoming one of the top JuCo players before eventually committing to Maryland where he would once again reunite with Mike Locksley.
Profiling the entire team
Nickname:
Pete said it was "Primetime" last year. We'll stick with that, unless we want to go with LTD for Long Touchdown.
Career Highlight:
His game against FIU last year, when when put up 110 receiving yards and a TD.
Dream Season:
Long and Diggs end up being first team All-Big Ten. Long puts up 800 yards receiving and grabs 8 TDs while remaining healthy all year.
2014 Prospectus:
It's not earth-shattering to say Deon Long is a really good receiver. He showed that last year in the stats he put up despite missing the last six games of the season. The only real question about Long's productivity is whether he is fully recovered from his awful injury last season and whether he can remain healthy all year.
With Long lining up on the field again this season with Stefon Diggs, along with a lot of other very good and talented receivers, he should be poised for another big year for the Terps. Teams can't focus on shutting down just one of Maryland's receivers. If they do, they'll get burned by the others. As long as Long can remain healthy, he should be putting up great numbers for the Terps this year.
