In "news so completely expected my dog could have predicted it," junior Maryland wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been named to the 2014 Biletnikoff Award Watch List. The award is annually given to the nation's top wide receiver -- last year's winner was Oregon State's Brandin Cooks.
This comes on the heels of Diggs's nominations to the watch lists for the Maxwell (college football's most outstanding player) and Hornung (college football's most verstile player) awards for the second straight year. Diggs joins Maryland center Sal Conaboy, kicker Brad Craddock and outside linebacker Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil as Terrapins nominated for positional watch lists thus far this season.
In Diggs's two seasons with the Terps, he has caught 88 passes for 1,435 yards and nine touchdowns. Nearly half of his first season was spent with a scout team linebacker playing quarterback, while nearly half of his second season was missed due to a horrific leg injury suffered against Wake Forest. He's on pace to break a number of Terrapin records (more on that later this week), but bringing in the award nominations is just fine for now, thanks.
Notably absent from the list is fellow star Maryland wide receiver Deon Long, a former four-/five-star recruit coming out of junior college who is expected to former one of the top receiving tandems in the nation with Diggs. In seven games last season, Long caught 32 passes for 489 yards and a touchdown. He also suffered a season-ending leg injury against Wake Forest.
