How'd He Get to College Park?

Kilgo, who received offers from Auburn, Michigan State, South Carolina, and Tennessee, stands out as an example of why coaches more often than not are better at evaluating talent than the major recruiting sites which showed him little regard. He was rated a 3 star by Rivals and Scout and only a 2 star by ESPN.

Lee Hull, who left Maryland in January to take the head coaching job at Morgan State, recruited Kilgo to Maryland.  As is common for many high school players, Kilgo played on both sides of the ball also serving as an offensive guard. He also played basketball and was on the indoor track and field squad. In high school, he was named all-conference and all-county.

Kilgo redshirted in 2010, and was named scout team defensive player of the week once. As a redshirt sophomore, he played in all 12 games after just playing as a redshirt freshman. He moved into the starting nose tackle slot last season, playing in all thirteen games and nearly doubling his output from the two previous years combined picking up 37 tackles on the season.

Aside from his UMTerps profile listing him as a "bulky defensive tackle who attacks blockers," it would be his two sacks last season.

Dream Season:

Kilgo continues to be an effective tackler while anchoring a defensive line that causes havoc in B1G backfields while surprising football guru Phil Steele by winning All-B1G honors at NT while recording 5 sacks.

2014 Prospectus:

As noted above, Darius Kilgo played very effectively last season nearly doubling his total tackles and more than doubling his tackles for a loss in his second season as the starting nose tackle. With Andre Monroe, Quinton Jefferson and some of the Terps young guns generating pressure from the outside, Kilgo, along with fellow senior Keith Bowers, should be part of an effective tandem eating up space in the middle of the defense.
