Maryland continued their winning ways in the month of May yesterday, this time taking down South Carolina and snapping one of the most impressive winning streaks in college baseball in the process as they held on to win, 4-3 over the Gamecocks.
Entering yesterday's game, South Carolina had won 17 consecutive post-season games at their home field, Carolina Stadium. That streak extended to 28 games when you take into account post-season games played in Columbia, SC. To put it another way, the Gamecocks hadn't lost in Columbia in the post season since 2002.
Yesterday's win leaves Maryland just one win shy of advancing to a Super Regional, as well as the only team who has yet to lose in the Columbia Regional. As a result, Maryland would have to lose two consecutive games in order to not advance to a Super Regional.
Maryland has already accomplished a lot this season, making the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 43 years and winning a game in the event for the first time since 1970. Advancing to a Super Regional would be yet another milestone for a Maryland Baseball program that has accomplished much in their final ACC season.
