Maryland basketball news: Charles Mitchell staying with program, per report

After rumors roared of his impending departure, the fan-favorite big man is staying with the Terps.

Good news out of College Park Wednesday for Mark Turgeon and Maryland basketball, as forward Charles Mitchell will be staying with the program, according to W-USA 9's Omar Mohammed.

Mitchell has never provided much in terms of scoring in his time with Maryland, but has consistently been one of the top offensive rebounders in the country and has found himself as a fan favorite due to his effort on the offensive boards (and his small stature for a big man). He averaged 6.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game last season, shooting 51.7% from the floor.

His strength has been on the boards -- he's known as a fighter inside, and has ranked in the top 15 nationally in offensive rebounding percentage over each of the past two seasons. He's expected to compete for one of the two starting big men spots next season, but is more likely to provide a spark of energy and rebounding off the bench at either the four or the five.

That means Maryland's scholarship situation stays stagnant for now, but they still have two open spaces for potential transfers.
