Maryland basketball recruiting: 2014 big man Michal Cekovsky commits to Maryland

Maryland will need to find roster space for the European seven-footer.

Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

Big, slightly unexpected news has been broken by Jeff Ermann of 247sports -- European seven-footer Michal Cekovsky has committed to Maryland as a member of the class of 2014.

Cekovsky, from Slovakia, is considered a high three-star by the 247sports composite, rating him as the 35th-best power forward in the class. 247sports is much higher on him in their non-composite rating, ranking him as the 39th-best player in the nation and the sixth-best power forward in the class.

The move comes as a surprise mostly because Maryland does not have the scholarship space to fit Cekovsky at the moment. There will have to be some movement of some sort -- either a transfer takes place or another member of the 2014 class will have to re-classify.

For now, it's time to celebrate a surprise commitment -- Cekovsky is a legit seven-footer with skills, and Maryland desperately missed the inside presence (and length) left by the departure of Alex Len last season.

The commitment makes Maryland's top 10 class that much stronger, as the Terps add Cekovsky to a group that includes four-star prospects Melo Trimble, Dion Wiley, Trayvon Reed and Jared Nickens.
