Maryland opens ACC tournament Friday, playing old rival North Carolina in the first of what Terp fans hope are three games in the tournament. The sixth-seeded Tar Heels beat Wake Forest 69-65 in the second round Thursday, and the winner of this game will face the winner of Duke/Georgia Tech. Alyssa Thomas, fresh off a third straight ACC Player of the Year award, is 14 points away from breaking Crystal Langhorne's program points record and 36 points away from breaking Juan Dixon's school points record.

Rankings and records: Maryland boasts a record of 25-5, with a 12-4 mark in ACC play. UNC finished the regular season 23-8, with a 10-6 record in conference competition. The Terrapins are the third seed in the tournament, while the Tar Heels are the sixth seed. Maryland is ranked No. 5 in the Coaches Poll and No. 8 in the AP Poll, while the Tar Heels are ranked No. 12. UNC holds a 38-37 all-time lead in the series, but Maryland holds a 7-4 advantage when the two teams have met in the ACC tournament.
