National Signing Day 2014 results: Which Maryland signees could make an instant impact?

The results of Signing Day are in, and it was a good one for Maryland. Five-star offensive tackle Damian Prince picked the Terps over Florida, and there were no surprise absences.

Let's review who the Terrapins signed, and where they fit in, both in the short-term and the long-term.

Potential Day One starters

Damian Prince

Height/weight: 6'5", 295 pounds

Position: Offensive tackle

High school: Bishop McNamara (District Heights, Md.)

Projected depth chart position: Starting left tackle. The most highly-touted recruit in the class, Prince has been Maryland's top target pretty much since Stefon Diggs's commitment. Grabbing the top player in the state of Maryland two out of three years is no small feat for a school that has always struggled to keep the top-tier local talent at home, and like Diggs, Prince is expected to contribute in a big way from the start.

Derwin Gray

Height/weight: 6'4", 291 pounds

Position: Offensive tackle

Previous school: Fork Union Military Academy (Fork Union, Va.)

Projected depth chart position: Starting right guard. Gray was supposed to be the biggest part of last year's class, but had to delay his enrollment by a year due to academic issues. After a year at Fork Union, he's ready to go, and should be favored for a starting job after enrolling early for the spring semester.

Larry Mazyck

Height/weight: 6'7", 340 pounds

Position: Offensive tackle

Previous school: Iowa Western Community College (Council Blufs, Ia.)

Projected depth chart position: Starting right tackle. Like Gray, Mazyck committed to Maryland in a previous class, and also enrolled early for the spring semester. Mazyck originally committed to the Terps when Ralph Friedgen was still the head coach, switching his commitment to Vanderbilt before eventually ending up on Mike Locksley's New Mexico team. Mazyck and Prince will probably be the two starting tackles, and we'll just have to see which side each will end up at.

Nate Adams

Height/weight: 6'2", 213 pounds

Position: Long-snapper

High school: Greenway (Phoenix, Ariz.)

Projected depth chart position: Starting long snapper. Greg Parcher is gone, which means the long-snapping position is open in College Park. It's safe to say Adams is the favorite, largely because you don't offer a scholarship to a long-snapper unless you think he's a four-year starter.

Other possible first-year contributors

Jesse Aniebonam

Height/weight: 6'4", 230 pounds

Position: Defensive end

High school: Good Counsel (Olney, Md.)

Projected depth chart position: Third-string WILL linebacker. Aniebonam's the second highest-rated player in the class, so it's entirely possible he cracks the two deep, but Maryland is stacked at the two positions he could end up playing (defensive end and WILL linebacker). I like Aniebonam more at the WILL position, and Edsall backs us up there.

Juwann Winfree

Height/weight: 6'2", 180 pounds

Position: Wide receiver

High school: Dwight Morrow (Englewood, N.j.)

Projected depth chart position: Second-string Y receiver. Maryland's receiving corps is absolutely stacked, but Winfree is a talent that simply can not be ignored (or stowed away for a year). Stefon Diggs and Deon Long have the Z and X positions on lockdown, respectively, but expect Winfree to compete heavily with Nigel King and Marcus Leak for playing time at the final starting spot.

Josh Woods

Height/weight: 6'3", 180 pounds

Position: Safety

High school: McDonogh (Owings Mills, Md.)

Projected depth chart position: Fourth-string free safety. Woods, Milan Collins and Zach Dancel will all be competing for the backup spot to Anthony Nixon at the position, and I imagine Dancel will win out on the depth chart (meaning he's the guy who comes in if Nixon gets tired or banged up) with Collins the most likely option for a long-term replacement, if Nixon suffers a serious injury. Although I'm very high on Woods, there are two legitimate options in front of him, and unless he really wows in camp or contributes on special teams, he could end up redshirting.

Daniel Ezeagwu

Height/weight: 6'2", 200 pounds

Position: Cornerback

High school: Colonial Forge (Stafford, Va.)

Projected depth chart position: Second-string cornerback. Jeremiah Johnson and Will Likely have all but guaranteed starting positions, and there's a big opening right after that. A.J. Hendy may spend some time playing nickel back or dime back, but Likely might also push inside for those sets, allowing for an opening on the outside. Alvin Hill and Jarrett Ross both have the experience advantage, but I think Ezeagwu can beat both of them out in camp.

Brendan Moore

Height/weight: 6'4", 260 pounds

Position: Offensive tackle

High school: Round Rock Westwood (Austin, Texas)

Projected depth chart position: Second-string guard. I think Moore eventually ends up at center, but for now I see him as a backup player who can be plugged in around the line for any starter who is tired or banged up. I'm extremely high on Moore -- he's got great form for a high schooler, with good strength for his size and excellent versatility -- and he could end up with a Sal Conaboy-ish career (starting at guard as a true freshman before moving to center).

Andrew Gray

Height/weight: 6'4", 215 pounds

Position: Tight end

High school: Chardon (Chardon, Ohio)

Projected depth chart position: Third-string tight end. P.J. Gallo is the favorite to start at tight end, but former high three-star recruit Andrew Isaacs could give him a run for his money. Gray is a block-first tight end, however -- something neither Gallo or Isaacs are particularly strong at. He'll probably see some playing time in goal-line sets.

David Shaw

Height/weight: 6'4", 270 pounds

Position: Defensive tackle

High school: Spring Grove Area (Spring Grove, Pa.)

Projected depth chart position: Third-string nose tackle. Darius Kilgo will be the starter, with Nate Clarke as the backup, but the only other players at the position are walk-ons Mike Minter and Azubuike Ukandu. Shaw is a project and should redshirt, but he could easily end up on the field if the opportunity arises.

Likely redshirts/long-term projects

Will Ulmer

Height/weight: 6'1", 190

Position: Quarterback

High school: St. John's College (Washington, D.C.)

247sports composite ratings: Three stars, 11th-best dual-threat quarterback, third best player in D.C.

Projected depth chart position: Scout team quarterback/athlete. The coaches have reportedly told Ulmer he'll be playing quarterback at Maryland, but there's a sizable portion of experts who believe he may end up somewhere else, like running back or slot receiver. The Terps certainly have a lot of depth at quarterback, and there's no such thing as too many athletes, but I do think Ulmer could be something special at quarterback.

Tyler Burke

Height/weight: 6'4", 225 pounds

Position: Defensive end

High school: Coatesville Area (Coatesville, Pa.)

247sports composite ratings: Three stars, 50th-best weak-side defensive end, 33rd-best player in Pennsylvania.

Projected depth chart position: Scout team linebacker. I think Burke is one of the better prospects in the class, but Maryland has way too much talent at linebacker (where I think he'll end up) for him to find consistent playing time. His frame is certainly an asset, but I was especially impressed with his instincts and tackling ability. He'll play a role in the future, and if he can put on (a lot) of weight he could be an excellent middle linebacker.

Nnamdi Egbuaba

Height/weight: 6'1", 215 pounds

Position: Outside linebacker

High school: St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, Md.)

247sports composite ratings: Three stars, 94th-best outside linebacker, 35th-best player in Maryland.

Projected depth chart position: Scout team linebacker. Egbuaba is a great fit for the SAM position, and could fit right in the mold of Alex Twine if he improves in his pass coverage. Like Burke, there's a lot of talent in front of him, but he could end up playing early on special teams.

Antwaine Carter Jr.

Height/weight: 6'2", 185 pounds

Position: Safety

High school: Westlake (Waldorf, Md.)

Projected depth chart position: Scout team safety. Carter and Woods could end up as a very promising safety combination, with Carter at strong safety and Woods at free safety. Sean Davis and A.J. Hendy have a lock on most of the playing time at the position this year, with redshirt freshman Elvis Dennah as a third option, which will allow Carter to further develop during his first season.

Sean Christie

Height/weight: 6'5", 280 pounds

Position: Offensive tackle.

High school: Patchogue-Medford (Medford, N.Y.)

Projected depth chart position: Scout team offensive tackle. Christie's not quite as developed as the other offensive line commitments, and will almost assuredly take a redshirt year to bulk up and provide solid depth over the remainder of his Terrapin career.

Brett Kulka

Height/weight: 6'5", 230 pounds

Position: Defensive end

High school: General McLane (Edinboro, Pa.)

Projected depth chart position: Scout team defensive end. Kulka is a good fit on the weakside, with similarly framed players in Quinton Jefferson, Roman Braglio and Malik Jones. The redshirt year will be very important for his development, as he has to put on significant weight.
