Maryland football recruiting: Talking Terps with top 2015 target Kai Locksley

With National Signing Day 2014 in the rearview and a solid, if small, recruiting class wrapped up for the Maryland football team, it's time to set our sights on what, or who, comes next. Included on the list of potential Terps is a very familiar last name.

For a multitude of reason, the most important 2015 recruit might be Kai Locksley. The quarterback is the son of Maryland offensive coordinator Mike Locksley and plays for Baltimore power Gilman High School. Maryland is not alone in pursuing the composite 4-star and 8th ranked dual threat quarterback in the class of 2015, as he lists offers from Auburn, Florida State, Ohio State and Alabama, among others.

Here's what the younger Locksley had to say when I talked to him earlier this week.

Testudo Times: How's the recruiting process treating you?

Kai Locksley: It's going well, kind of stressful but it's fun.

TT: How many offers are you up to these days?

KL: 15-20.

TT: Do you have any that stick out?

KL: I just came back from a Virginia Tech visit and liked it a lot. I'll be on multiple visits throughout the spring/summer to determine the other that will most interest me.

TT: How is your dad involved in your recruiting process? I know he's said that he is going to be a dad not a coach for you in this, but is he involved at all?

KL: He gives me tips on what to look for and questions to ask on my visits. I always go to him if I have any questions or need advice. So he's completely involved.

TT: What are you hearing from Maryland? Who's your lead recruiter?

KL: They want to get me down for the junior day, and I'll be there for the spring game. Coach Powell and Coach Edsall are my recruiters.

TT: What do you like most about Maryland as a school and football program?

KL: It's a big school, great academically, and of course the good location. As a program they have a strong staff, fit my play as a QB offensively and are on the rise.

TT: How would you classify your playing style as a quarterback? What are your strengths and weaknesses?

KL: I would say a dual threat who looks to throw first, and when in trouble I can escape with my feet. Strengths are versatility and athleticism. Weakness is probably my footwork and some technique things.

TT: Do you talk to anyone on the team?

KL: Yeah I'm real cool with guys like Ricardo Young, Stef [Diggs], Deon [Long], Wes [Brown] and Zach Dancel. They're like big brothers to me.

TT: What are they telling you about playing at Maryland? Are they trying to recruit you?

KL: When I see them they're always joking around with me telling me I need to be a Terp and stay home, but other then that not too much, they all understand the process.

TT: Do you have any leaders? A top 10 or 5? Any idea when you are planning on making a final decision?

KL: No, I probably won't have a list until around May or June. I'm looking to commit by the end of the summer, that's the goal.
