History of the Foster Farms Bowl

The Maryland Terrapins are going bowling! This time, to the Foster Farms Bowl in Santa Clara, California. What is the Foster Farms Bowl?

Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

The Maryland Terrapins were selected to play in the Foster Farms Bowl on December 30 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. I know what everyone was thinking when they heard this; "what the heck is the Foster Farms Bowl?" The Foster Farms Bowl is formerly known as the Fight Hunger Bowl, and before that, the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. From 2002-2003, this bowl was named the Diamond Walnuts San Francisco Bowl and from 2004-2009, the Emerald Bowl.

This bowl used to be played at AT&T Stadium, home of the San Francisco Giants, but has been moved to the new San Francisco 49ers stadium this season.

For those who may not remember, Maryland actually played in this bowl in 2007 against Oregon State, falling by a score of 21-14. This bowl has frequently featured a member from either the ACC or Pac-12, with Boston College making the most appearances with three, finishing with a 1-2 record in those games.

Some other notable schools to make an appearance in this bowl include Florida State, UCLA, USC, Virginia Tech, Washington, BYU, Georgia Tech, California, and others. This bowl consistently features high-name schools and usually makes for a competitive game.

In 2012, Arizona State played this bowl game against Navy and walloped them by a score of 62-28. Marion Grice got the MVP honors for the offense, rushing for 159 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns. Taking a look at how Maryland fared in this bowl, they jumped out to a 14-7 lead over the Beavers, but couldn't hold on for the rest of the game. In that game, Chris Turner threw for two touchdowns, connecting with Darrius Heywatd-Bey for a 63-yarder in the first quarter.

Just last season, Washington and BYU battled it out in the Fight Hunger Bowl with the Huskies topping the Cougars 31-16. Bishop Sankey, now a Tennessee Titan, rushed for two touchdowns to pace the way for the win and an MVP performance.

Now, we get to see the Terps take another shot at bringing home a bowl victory in Northern California, this time, against Stanford. With the close proximity, there should be a healthy amount of Stanford fans in attendance for the game. The game time is set for 10:00pm EST, so get your sleep in while you can.
