The Maryland Terrapins and Arizona State Sun Devils went tit-for-tat in a high scoring affair, but the Terps prevailed in large part to a 31-point performance from freshman guard Melo Trimble. Despite Trimble's near record-setting game, the Terps turned to senior leader Dez Wells in the end, and he delivered a short jumper to push Maryland ahead of the sharp shooting Sun Devils with just seconds to spare.
In the second game, No. 13 ranked Iowa State escaped Alabama 84-74, led by the junior star Georges Niang, who contributed 28 points. The CBE Hall of Fame Classic in Kansas City is technically a neutral tournament but Iowa State's campus in Ames, IA is just over three aways away from the Kansas City.
The Cyclones are coming off a 28-8 season, which earned them a three seed in the tournament before falling to the eventual champion in Connecticut. Iowa State returned much of their key pieces from last year despite losing star Melvin Ejim and have five players averaging double-digits in points. Maryland is off to a hot 4-0 start and will face their toughest test to date with the Cyclones.
