Time for another recruiting roundup, as the open period is upon us and news is flying around.
First up, three-star offensive tackle Jared Cohen will take an official visit to North Carolina January 24. Cohen was Maryland's first commit in the 2014 class before decommitting after receiving an offer from dream school Penn State, but the Nittany Lions have gone in a different direction under James Franklin. Cohen was originally supposed to visit State College this weekend, but will instead be headed to Chapel Hill. This looks like a two-headed race between UNC and Maryland, and there are signs pointing either way (so we can call it a toss-up at this point).
Maryland has four visitors of their own this weekend -- commits Brett Kulka, Sean Christie and David Shaw as well as cornerback target Daniel Ezeagwu. Ezeagwu would be an important get for the Terps, who desperately need at least one (if not two) corners in the class to make up for the whiff on Jalen Tabor. Last weekend, Ezeagwu visited Virginia (and apparently enjoyed it quite a bit). Expect this one to be between Maryland, Virginia and James Madison -- the only school to offer both Daniel and his twin brother David.
The Terps have also extended a new offer in the 2015 class, to four-star Calvert Hall (Md.) cornerback Dionte Austin. Austin already holds offers from Virginia Tech, UVA and Rutgers, among others, and would be a pretty fantastic grab for the class. Maryland will likely end up with two depth-boosters (like Ezeagwu) at corner in this class, and the opportunity to bring in a blue-chipper in 2015 would be absolutely perfect. Here's his highlight tape -- he's got a great burst of speed and a good sense of the ball, but has to put on some bulk to become a college-level tackler.
A former 2014 defensive back target has pledged elsewhere, as DaeJuan Funderburk (from Friendship Academy in DC) has committed to West Virginia. It was an expected move, as Funderburk was rumored to be a WVU lean for a while and Maryland already has two safeties in the class (although Josh Woods may end up at corner).
Two top 2015 targets have received big-time offers, as Good Counsel defensive end Darius Fullwood was offered by Ohio State and Gilman quarterback Kai Locksley has been offered by Ole Miss. Locksley is obviously the more likely grab, but you can safely expect Fullwood's three-star rating to improve fairly shortly.
There's another local cornerback prospect that Maryland could look to try and bring on, either as a scholarship player or as a walk-on -- Northwood senior Zephaniah Langley. He's received interest from a host of FCS powers, but could end up being a backup option for the Terps if Ezeagwu and some of the other pieces fall elsewhere. Here's his highlight film.
