After getting a brief glimpse of the 2013-2014 version of Maryland's men's basketball team when they played in the Bahamas this summer, the season will officially kick off on October 18th when the school will host it's annual "Maryland Madness" event on campus.

Midnight Madness was originally started by former Maryland head coach Charles "Lefty" Driesell, who wanted to get a competitive edge for his team by having them begin practice the minute the NCAA allowed them to, which meant at 12:01 AM on October 15th. What began as a simple 1.5 mile run around the track at Byrd Stadium has turned into a spectacle of over the top entertainment at schools across the U.S. The NCAA eventually changed their rules, allowing practices to start before midnight on the closest Friday to October 15th. But the rules have been revised yet again, allowing for practices to start up to 30 days before a team's first game of the season. But it sounds like Maryland is sticking with the Friday closest to October 15th rule.
29 days until basketball is back. Can't wait.
