High School Highlights:

How'd He Get to College Park?

One of the top wide receivers in the state of Maryland in 2009, Tyrek Cheeseboro was an all-state selection who ended up playing in the Crab Bowl. He chose the Terps over offers from Pittsburgh and West Virginia, among others.

After a fantastic junior season and a good senior campaign (although he struggled at times with a new quarterback), Cheeseboro ended up at Fork Union for a year, moving to Maryland’s 2010 class instead of 2009. At Union, he was teammates with Nate Clarke, another high profile member of Maryland’s 2009/10 classes.

Cheeseboro enrolled early at Maryland in 2010, and played in three games on special teams before suffering a season-ending knee injury. In those three games, he recorded two tackles. He was granted a medical waiver, giving him a retroactive redshirt.

As a redshirt freshman in 2011, Cheeseboro excelled on special teams, ranking second on the team with ten tackles with the unit.

Nickname:

"T-Rek" or "Cheese"

Career Highlight:

Forcing a fumble against Georgia Tech.

Dream Season:

Cheeseboro forces another fumble, records ten more special teams tackles, and catches a touchdown.

2013 Prospectus:

Cheeseboro's career seems to mirror LaQuan Williams thus far - a receiver who excels primarily in the special teams and blocking portions of the game. He didn't make the team's two-deep, but should see some field time this year. He will likely make his biggest impact on special teams, however - which isn't a knock on him, as it's an oft-overlooked part of the game that is necessary for winning teams.
