Three Terps Named to Preseason All-ACC Field Hockey Team

With a forward, a midfielder, and a defender, Maryland is well represented on the coaches preseason All ACC Team.

Well, fall sports are just around the corner and it's time for me to start peppering Testudo Times with mass quantities of text. I'll start with today's announcement by the ACC of the preseason All-ACC Field Hockey team that features three Terrapins - the most of any school in the conference. North Carolina and Virginia each placed two players on the team. Maryland's representatives are senior forward Jill Witmer, senior defender Ali McEvoy, and junior midfielder.forward Maxine Fluharty received the honors as voted by the coaches.

Witmer, a two time All-American and ACC Freshman of the Year, is making her second appearance on the preseason list and has been named to the all conference team at the end of each of her three previous seasons. She may be best remembered for scoring the game winning goal in the Terps 3-2 overtime win against North Carolina to help Maryland capture the 2011 National Championship.

Like Witmer, McEvoy has been a member of two National Champions and a Final Four team. She helped anchor a defense that yielded just 1.42 goals per game in the 2012 season. Though she was named to the All-ACC team following her sophomore year, this is McEvoy's first appearance on the preseason team.

Maxine Fluharty, plays an all-around game combining solid defense, with good passing skills as well as being an active scoring threat inside the circle. This is the junior's first All-ACC honor.

The coaches selected North Carolina, which returns its entire roster to defend their ACC Championship. The Terps, who return eight starters from last season's Final Four team placed second with Duke and newcomer Syracuse rounding out the top four.

The Terps open the season with three road games that include a possible matchup with future Big Ten opponent Ohio State as well as a contest in Norfolk against the perennial powerhouse Old Dominion Monarchs before their home opener against Drexel on September 8.
