How'd he get to College Park?

In high school, Altamirano was named first team All-Valley in his last two years, and went to San Diego Mesa College, where he spent two years playing tackle. After last year, he was named to first-team All-Southern California Football Association, and received offers from UConn, Maryland, New Mexico, SMU and Washington State, visiting the latter two and Mayland. Three days after his December visit to College Park, he committed to the program.

Maryland came into the process late, and I highly suggest you check out this great interview with Prewitt. where Altamirano talks more about why he went across the country - notably, he saw an opportunity to start early (more on that in a bit).

"The Cave"

Career Highlight:

Entering his Maryland career second on the left guard depth chart.

Dream Season:

Winning the starting job.

2013 Prospectus:

Altamirano is second on Maryland's depth chart at left guard, behind senior De'Onte Arnett and in front of walk-on Dylan O'Connor. The JuCo transfer is strong, especially as a run blocker, and with Maryland's inexperience at guard he should figure to see a whole lot of playing time this year.

Arnett and right guard starter Andre Zeller aren't exactly locks as starters (although Zeller is probably a better bet than the converted D-lineman Arnett), and Altamirano gives Maryland some semblance of depth - he's their only backup at guard who isn't a walk-on.

Up Next:

Our next player shares his first name with a former Maryland linebacker who went on to play in the pros.
